I used to do that, but now I use Mesh (http://mesh.com) – works even better because now I have access to those files across re-installs, across computers and across devices (i.e. my phone). Give it a try and see how you like it!

Cheers!

For users with multiple hard drives, (and those not using RAID) I always recommend storing the OS on one drive and user data on the other. Starting with XP and made even easier in Vista (right-click special folder, change ‘Location’) I have stored My Documents, My Music, etc on a physically separate hard drive. This makes an OS wipe/fresh install/re-install so much easier than trying to pick out users files all across their machine. For my setup, it also makes sharing data across OS’s much easier. I have XP, Vista and Win7 each installed on separate partitions on the same OS drive with all of my data on a different drive. Each OS is then configured to use this data drive for My Documents. For certain programs with portable ‘profiles’ (aka Firefox, Songbird) I store the profiles on this data drive as well. Now I can run the same Firefox profile/installation without syncing on all three OS’s. Lastly, for programs that support portable installation (Notepad++, anything from portableapps.com) I install to a PortableApps folder at the root of my data drive. This allows as many programs as possible to share user data/profile info across OS’s. Now I have a setup as close as possible to a true /home setup. Of course, most programs will still need re-installed with an OS re-install, but my portableapps, and even some non-portable apps will have my data secure and ready to go. Losing an OS is no longer a huge deal. (Note, this doesn’t replace a backup strategy. My data drive is still backed up.)
