NO WAY. I wouldn't want to work in scented cancle land anymore than I want to work in nascar land, or jedi land.

That said, I'd love working the jungle potted plant land. Higher air quality would be great.

I'll bet in an office decorated with potted plants, scented candles, an gauzy curtains you can find a woman who talks football and Nascar, but as a snap judgement, do you want to work there?

First of all, just because YOU are not a 100% typical nerd doesn't mean that nerdy culture doesn't exist in the CS/software world. Denying that you're a part of it doesn't prove that it isn't prevalent, or that it isn't a problem in attracting women (and "non-nerdy" guys) to the field.

But honestly, I don't think it's the nerdy culture that's the main problem. At the end of the article they also mention that it's a cultural construction, not a fact, that women are turned off by steoretypically geek objects. And in fact, there are lots more women from other cultures (Chinese or Indian, for example) in tech fields. So that tells me we should change our culture in the US, not our office environments. So it's up to you to raise your daughter thinking technology is cool, not geeky!
