Allowing Users to mount a USB drive in a controlled (lab) environment

whiprush posted a while back about the requirement of Administrator access on a Windows 2000/XP computer to mount a USB memory device as a drive.

I’m wondering if setting the “Load and unload device drivers” security setting policy to include users instead of just administrators would allow this.

update: and maybe Perform volume maintenance tasks. And the security option “Devices: Allowed to format and eject removeable media”.

  1. Nope. Still asks for an administrative password to install the hardware in Service Pack 2. (Keep in mind, it wan’t like this in SP1.) On the plus side, you can hit cancel and the drive still mounts, but this only works half the time.
